How to Carpool Without the Awkward Small Talk (Unless You’re Into That)

Traffic. Gas prices. Fighting over the one decent parking spot left. We’ve all been there. The good news? Alamo Commutes has a carpool feature that can help with that (and maybe even make your mornings a little more fun).
Here’s your quick-start guide:
- Sign up in under five minutes.
Go to AlamoCommutes.org or download the free Alamo Commutes app (iOS or Android). All you need is an email or Facebook to create an account. - Build your profile.
Think of it as your “commute dating profile”—except instead of long walks on the beach, you’re looking for someone who’s cool with your playlist and coffee stops. Add your work schedule, preferences (smoker/non-smoker, driver/rider, gender), and you’re good to go. - Search for a match.
Click on “Find Ride,” enter where you’re starting, where you’re headed, and whether it’s a regular commute (like your daily trip to work) or one-time trip. Then click on the car icon for carpool, and the app will show you matches near your route. - Make the connection.
See a match that works? Send them a quick message to coordinate. No awkwardness—you’re both there for the same reason: saving money, skipping traffic stress, and maybe finding a new route buddy.

What If I’m Nervous About Carpooling with Someone New?
That’s totally normal! Remember, the app lets you filter matches by your preferences (like only carpooling with someone from your workplace or who matches your schedule). You can also message and get to know potential carpool buddies before committing—think of it as a “test drive” before the actual ride.
What If I Can’t Find a Match?
Don’t panic, sometimes it just takes a little tweaking. Try:
- Adjusting your start or end location to a nearby VIA Park & Ride or a central meeting point.
- Expanding your search radius (default is 2 miles).
- Keeping your profile active so you’ll get notified when someone new signs up who is a fit.
What If I Only Need a One-Time Ride?
No problem! You can search for single trips—whether it’s for shopping, a doctor’s appointment, or a special event.
Can I Just Drive or Just Ride?
Yep! In your profile, you can choose if you want to be the driver, the rider, or keep it flexible.
Do I Have to Carpool Every Day?
Absolutely not. You can share your availability in advance or just coordinate week by week with your carpool partner. Life happens, just give them a heads-up if plans change.
Pro Tip Reminders for First-Timers:
- No match right away? Widen your search radius or set a pickup point like a VIA Park & Ride.
- Don’t want to drive? Mark yourself as a rider only.
- Not ready for full-time commitment? Set your days in advance—or just take it week by week.
Bottom line: Carpooling isn’t all-or-nothing. Just a couple of rides can cut costs and make your commute easier.
